Introduction To Blender
By Michael Priest
- Welcome To Oasis Studios Blender Tutorials.
I would like to start with a little background about myself I started College in 2009 at Chippewa Valley Tech in Eau Claire, Wis in the IT Computer Programmer Analyst Course. I created many 3D Models using 3ds Max and creating several games in Torque 3D and Unity Game Engines. I also studied Web Design, Flash Animation, 3D Modeling, Data Base Design and Management, and a number of Programming Languages such as HTML4, HTML5, Java, C++, Action Script, Java Script, PHP, MYSQL, Unix and Linux.
I have not had that much time using Blender to create my 3D Models but I will be jumping ship from using 3ds Max to Blender mainly due to cost issues as well as the fact that Blender is open source. I will also be jumping ship from using Unity and Torque to create my games to the Unreal Game Engine. We will be learning this together and from short time I have used Blender there is not a huge difference in it compared to all the other programs that I have used just some of the naming conventions are a little different so hang with me and if you have any questions please leave a comment and I will try to get you the answers if I can. Blender has an amazing community of developers and programmers that you can also get information from as well and youtube.com is full of great videos as learning resources so while you are waiting for me to get the next Blog out learn how to use all the resources that are available on the Web.
- Introduction To Blender
So the question is what is Blender and the short answer is Blender is a 3D Animation Program or suite and one of the great features that I love most of all is that it is open source no more paying to use the programs that are needed to create 3D Models, Games and Simulations like most of the other programs that are out there. I love all of the other programs don't get me wrong but for someone that is just starting out in 3D modeling or wants to create their very own games it is very unrealistic that anyone would spend that kind of money just to learn the program so from that aspect this is the only way to go.
Blender can be used to create video games, Animations, 3D Models, Images and much more and there are several plugins that are available for Blender that are also open source and programmers are hard at work making new ones all the time and you yes you can even develop some of your own if you are really good at programming and yes we will get into some of that at a later time in my Tutorials.
Blender uses the OpenGl interface so it can run on Widows, Linux and Mac OSX systems across any supported platforms and hardware as do a lot of other programs that are available to those that wish to spend the money to use them.
- Downloading Blender
Downloading Blender is easy go to blender.org or click Here to download the latest version for the platform you are running. This is the first hurdle that you need to cross before you begin to dive into the big wide world of 3D Modeling and Game Design. The download is very strait forward so if you have problems with this I would really say that you need to learn how to at least do that before moving on.
- In The Next Blog
In the next Oasis Studios Blender Tutorial we will be discussing some of the key elements of Blender and I hope to get into the user interface so till next time never stop learning make it a life long habit.
